8 Beautiful Spots for Photo Sessions in Cape Town

Ida Irvine

It’s no secret that Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities in the world – especially when it comes to those perfect photo opportunities. You have gorgeous beaches with mountainous backdrops, sunsets over the ocean, cute (instagramable) coffee shops and streets that look like they could be featured in a Victorian film! Being a photographer in this city, is an absolute dream!

When my husband and I moved here in February 2022, I searched the web for places to capture breathtaking moments between lovers, families, etc. but I couldn’t find exactly what I was looking for. Having done a few shoots here now, I’ve decided to put together my own list of favourite spots (which will be updated as I get to shoot at more incredible places). If you’re new in town, check out these amazing photoshoot locations in beautiful Cape Town.

  1. STELLENBOSCH

I took to the streets of Stellenbosch with Reza and Gielie for their engagement session, and we walked all over the place with me getting excited about every street corner and beautiful European-style backdrops that most of the buildings in this town had to offer.

Kyla and Hugo had the same idea for their engagement session, and the results were just “chef’s kiss”. We even found a cute little restaurant (it was closed) but there was a table outside with a red table cloth, complete as if it had been left there for us to use during our session!

2. SILVERMINE

Apart from Muizenberg, one of Duncan’s favourite surf spots is either Witsands or Noordhoek beach (which will also feature here), but to get there, you have to drive over the mountain, through Silvermine nature reserve. I am always in awe of the view, the sunset, the sunrise, the gorgeous green flora – everything about this place gives me goosebumps!

One early Saturday morning, we drove out to Silvermine with Janke and Claude to capture them and the sunrise. I was SO EXCITED to get home and start working on these photos. My ideal couples: adventure seekers, just like Duncan and I!

3. WITSANDS

Another couple braving an early morning couples session with me on the beach. What I love about Witsands, is the incredible mountain backdrop combined with the beautiful ocean. There are also no cars, buildings or people to distract you while you’re getting into the mood of the shoot!

4. TABLE MOUNTAIN ROAD

This spot also brags with a spectacular city view on the one side, and an epic mountain view on the other! You can have a combination of Lion’s Head and the city in the background of every photo.

What’s nice about this spot, is that you have access to the road with no danger of cars coming your way. This road has been blocked off to cars for a while, but you might find the occasional cyclists or runners. Be careful – this spot can get pretty windy!

5. NOORDHOEK BEACH

As I mentioned before, this is one of the spots that my husband loves to surf at. And it makes pretty great photos too! Eden and Marianna booked a sunset session with me – we started off on the white dunes and ended by the ocean for a few moody blue-hour shots.

We also made use of the little lagoon on the beach for a few artsy reflection shots.

6. MAJIK FOREST

If you’re looking for forest vibes that aren’t too far from the Northern Suburbs (Durbanville, etc) Majik Forest is your best bet! Just make sure you keep their closing time in mind – you don’t want to be locked in after 18:00 in the winter.

7. CONSTANTIA NEK

Also a forest-themed shoot with the bonus of another spectacular mountain backdrop! This trail might be a little busy, but I recommend scheduling a shoot for a weekday after hours. Also be sure to check when the sun will be where! I try to make a habit of scouting the locations I shoot at, just to make sure we don’t turn up with the sun having said her final goodbyes behind the mountain at 16:00 in the afternoon.

AndrĂ© and Zanel brought their cute little pup Revo along for the shoot – she was definitely at home in front of the camera!

We caught the sun perfectly in the last couple of minutes of the session. Zanel is practically glowing Here!

8. PAARDEVLEI

We live in the Southern Suburbs, so it’s rare for us to travel to Somerset West when shooting. However, this particular location will forever be an all time favourite! If you’re looking for golden grass all-year round, Paardevlei is the answer. You also won’t be disappointed by the beautiful golden sunset (depending on the weather, of course).

You can have a look at a whole post I did for these two over here.

That’s it for now. I’ll keep this post updated as I get the chance to shoot at a whole lot more epic locations in the beautiful Cape Town! Comment below if you can think of any other spots that I haven’t mentioned here – it might give me a few more ideas.
