We were trying so hard to find a date that would work for everyone for Kim and André's big wedding, but it just didn't seem to want to line up. Thank goodness it didn't, because instead, they decided to take the leap and elope in the dunes at one of the most iconic, and honestly one of the most difficult, spots to reach in the entire Namib Desert: Sandwich Harbour, where towering dunes plunge straight into the Atlantic Ocean.
Sandwich Harbour sits about 80 kilometres south of Walvis Bay, inside the Namib-Naukluft National Park, and it isn't a place you simply drive to on a whim. The route in follows a narrow, tide-dependent strip of beach squeezed between the ocean and dunes that rise well over 100 metres - at the wrong tide, that beach disappears entirely under the waves. It takes an experienced 4x4 driver with real local knowledge of the tides and dune routes to get there and back safely, which is exactly why this remains one of the least-visited, most untouched elopement locations in Namibia. If you're picturing a Namib Desert elopement far away from the crowds, this is about as far as it gets.
We started the day at the salt pans just outside Swakopmund, their pale, otherworldly flats making for a striking first stop before the real adventure began. From there, we made our way through the dunes toward Sandwich Harbour itself, and I have to admit... I got a little dune-sick on the way back. It's not the easiest route, and the dunes felt like enormous waves that could tip the car at any moment. Every steep crest and drop is worth it the second you crest that final dune and the desert simply stops, replaced by the crashing Atlantic stretching out below.
Kim and André's ceremony against that backdrop (golden sand on one side, deep blue ocean on the other) was one of those moments that reminds me why I chase locations like this in the first place. It's not a setting most couples ever get to stand in, let alone marry in, and that rarity is exactly what made their elopement feel so entirely their own.
If a date that "just won't line up" ever leads you to a smaller, wilder celebration instead, don't fight it.
